Wish 1: Advanced Hospital Waste Management Solution ($35000 USD)

In developing countries, particularly in rural areas, there’s a shortfall in suitable methods for hospital waste disposal. Several studies have highlighted that mismanagement of hospital waste leads to environmental and occupational health risks. Therefore, our first wish is to install a clean and economical non-incinerator technology-based waste management equipment that solves the problem of disposal of hazardous, contaminated, and infectious waste generated at Siddhasthali Rural Community Hospital.

This advanced system employs pioneering pyrolysis and gasification techniques to convert medical waste into heat energy in an efficient and environmental friendly manner. By avoiding incineration, this method prevents the release of noxious emissions such as dioxins, CO2, SO2, and other greenhouse gases. The process meticulously breaks down organic materials within a sealed environment under limited oxygen supply, converting them into a synthetic gas (syngas) primarily comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Upon ignition, this syngas reaches temperatures of 800 – 1200 °C, dramatically reducing waste volume to about 4-5% of its original size, resulting in ash or clinker. This byproduct creates a revenue opportunity by being suitable for sale to cement factories, thereby transforming waste management challenges into an avenue for additional hospital income.

The introduction of advanced dental equipment at Siddhasthali Rural Community Hospital will enable the hospital to offer comprehensive dental services previously unavailable in the region. The electrically operated dental chair comes with high-end dental tools, including a micromotor, scaler and intraoral camera. This equipment will significantly improve the quality of dental care at Siddhasthali Rural Community Hospital and ensure that complex dental procedures can be performed with greater precision and safety.

In addition to its significant contributions to dental healthcare, the Yeti Foundation also extended its administrative support to the fundraiser organized by the Hovey Family. This collaborative effort successfully addressed the critical infrastructural needs of the hospital, facilitating the acquisition of a 125 KvA generator and a 20-passenger bed lift.

The donated critical medical supplies include resources such as Disaster Preparedness Packs, Emergency Medical Packs, Sutures, Syringes, Dressings, Surgical Masks, IV Administration Sets, and Catheters.

This donation will significantly aid the hospital’s capacity to serve the needy, offering a broader range of medical services and ensuring that healthcare is accessible to everyone.

While Nepal has considerable hydropower potential, the effectiveness of hydropower is heavily dependent on seasonal variations. During the monsoon and dry seasons, there is a marked fluctuation in hydropower production due to changing water levels, leading to inconsistent energy availability. Moreover, the infrastructure and maintenance costs associated with hydropower plants are substantial. These high costs can be particularly burdensome for a developing country like Nepal, where allocating extensive resources for energy infrastructure may detract from other vital areas of development. This situation often forces health centres and other essential services to rely on diesel generators as an alternative energy source. However, diesel fuel is not only expensive but also contributes to environmental pollution and is subject to price and supply volatility, which can be especially challenging for a developing economy.

The impact of these energy challenges has been starkly evident in Nepal’s recent history. There were times when the country experienced more than 18 hours of electricity outages in a day, severely disrupting daily life and critical services. For health centres, such outages can have dire consequences, affecting everything from the storage of medicines and vaccines to the operation of life-saving medical equipment and basic lighting needs. In such a scenario, the unreliability of the electrical grid can compromise the quality of healthcare delivery and even endanger lives.

Solar energy offers a viable and sustainable solution to these challenges. It provides a more consistent and reliable power source that is not subject to the same seasonal fluctuations as hydropower. Being renewable and clean, solar energy reduces dependence on costly and polluting diesel fuel, aligning with both environmental sustainability goals and the economic realities of a developing nation. The initial setup cost of solar installations is offset by the long-term benefits of lower operational costs and a more stable power supply.

The Rotary Club of Hetauda’s compassionate donation includes a set of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment valued at NPR 77,50,000. This equipment comprises:

Digital Radiography offers a range of benefits over traditional X-ray systems, Retrofit and Computerized radiography systems, making it a superior choice in many medical imaging applications. It offers significantly improved image quality with high-resolution and detailed images that are crucial for accurate diagnoses. Additionally, it ensures enhanced patient safety by typically requiring lower doses of radiation. The immediate availability of images streamlines the diagnostic process, especially critical in emergencies. DR also simplifies the workflow by eliminating the need for film processing, and its digital nature allows for easy and secure storage, as well as quick sharing of images within the medical community. Furthermore, DR facilitates image manipulation and enhancement for better diagnostic accuracy and is more environmentally friendly due to the absence of chemical processing. DR proves to be more cost-effective over time, considering its operational efficiencies and reduced material costs.

This remarkable achievement was made possible with the support of CHANCE for Nepal, a UK-based Charity. The funding for the procurement of the DR system was raised through an online auction, showcasing the power of community engagement and digital platforms in driving social change.
